Express Interest in BTS Committee Positions

We are an all-inclusive multispecialty charitable society for all those involved in the care of the injured – from point of injury to rehabilitation. We aim to promote education and research to our members and to the wider community.

We organise an Annual Scientific Meeting and educational events throughout the year, and we are currently building our online resource bank to benefit our members. We support other trauma societies and strive to continuously build relationships, both national and international, and aim to publish trauma guidelines involving the wider mutli-disciplinary team.

We currently require a general secretary, who ideally must be a consultant or senior registrar to fill this important role.

Specific role descriptions and desirable skills are below, but we expect all committee/sub-committee members to exemplify the following attributes:

  • Computer literacy
  • Good English Language skills, able to communicate in both professional as well as natural colloquial English
  • Knowledge of Trauma  and/or Trauma Surgery to allow insightful updating of the written and video content
  • Bring fresh ideas to advance the BTS and member engagement
  • Organisational and Leadership skills – ability to take on responsibility, and work with an element of autonomy. Also, be able to make a useful contribution towards organising our next Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • Good communication skills are essential – both for responding to tasks as well as discussing amongst Exec and sub-committees
  • Ability to work flexibly, and share the load of the other respective sub-committee roles as required/ is reasonable according to need, within your sub-teams
  • Ability to organise and perform their role efficiently around clinical responsibilities and other commitments

Student liaison officer

Sub-committee working with Comms and Membership Secretaries

  • To act as a liaison between the BTS and universities with regards to advertising and sponsorship
  • To liaise with student bodies/societies related to trauma to encourage engagement with the BTS
  • To assist with the organisation of the annual scientific meeting and other events throughout the year

International liaison officer

Sub-committee working with Comms and Membership Secretaries

  • To act as a liaison between the BTS and international, trauma-related bodies with regards to advertising and sponsorship. To increase engagement of such international bodies with the BTS

Website update lead

Sub-committee working with Communication and Web Officer

Your role will be primarily to help with regular updates to the BTS Website. This will include content, both written and multimedia. In particular, we are planning to significantly expand the digital, interactive aspect of our website, and fill the members’ area with multimedia content.

To assist with the organisation of the annual scientific meeting and other events throughout the year

Desirable skills:

  • Computer literacy, familiarity with website design (specifically WordPress interface) and video editing
  • Familiarity with setting up private YouTube channels/ embedding into websites is desirable
  • Insight into Trauma care and Trauma Surgery is essential, to allow credible, high quality updating and editing of content
  • To assist with the organisation of the annual scientific meeting and other events throughout the year

Social media lead

Sub-committee working with Communication and Web Officer

Your role will be to facilitate daily updates of the BTS Twitter Feed. This will include retweeting important news relating to Trauma in its entirety – ensuring a pan-specialty interest. You will also have to tweet about new, interesting and important innovations and research in the sphere of Trauma.

To assist with the organisation of the annual scientific meeting and other events throughout the year

Desirable Skills:

  • Critically appraise a scientific/medical paper to ensure quality and create discussions on social media
  • Develop good online rapport with other Twitter users, and manage ‘troll traffic’ appropriately
  • Familiarity with Twitter and experience with updating and Retweeting is desirable

Email communications lead

Sub-committee working with Communication and Web Officer

Your role will be to manage the two BTS email accounts daily (Exec account and Google account), and alert the appropriate member of the Exec as needed for any response. Where able/possible, you will be responsible for responding on behalf of the Exec or other sub-committees as appropriate. This role is new and set to expand and develop throughout the course of this year.

Education sub-committee

Sub-committee working with Education Leads

In line with the British Trauma Society’s overall mission of having a global impact on the care of the polytrauma patient, the Education Committee are actively engaged with numerous projects and international collaborative activities.

On behalf of the British Trauma Society we:

  • Support and deliver educational events including pre-conference workshops, adhoc themed conferences and courses and of course, the Annual Scientific Meeting.
  • Publish multi-disciplinary, multi-professional guidance and practicable protocols, for use in the care of severely injured, polytrauma patients
